If you like football then you will love this game; everything about this game is great.
The game play is so addictive and challenging! The graphics are great!
The sound is spot on and the in game effects are what you would expect from a game like this. It’s great!
You start with the options menu and you can choose if you want to either get straight in to this game or play an exhibition game against one of your friends or you can start any of the cup modes which are on offer, the cup modes are great and there are four to choose from. The one I chose to review this game is the European cup mode which is based on the champions’ league format. Basically you start off in a group mode and the top two qualify for the last stages of the cup which is a knock out stage from there on, this is quite a hard game to play which just adds to the addictive game play of sensible soccer!
The league format is quite a good mode to play and you can play any league in the world from the premiership to the Brazilian leagues and the stadium effects from all these countries and attention to detail are second to none.
This game is really addictive, challenging and bright! You won’t be disappointed.
Reviewer: Dos-Games-Online Released in the middle nineties, the original Sensible World of Soccer spawned a series, one of which is the Sensible World of Soccer 96/97…released a bit more than two years following the original. Developed by Sensible Software and released for play to the personal computer by Renegade Software, The Sensible World of Soccer 96/97 updates and improves upon an already good foundation, making it bigger and better than ever. It plays out in the very user friendly top down or bird’s eye view and received some of the highest marks of any of the soccer games in this huge series.
The overall game play of the Sensible World of Soccer remains unchanged in this version. The user still plays the part of a soccer coach, and can select from a great number of teams from virtually any country. The teams and players are updated in this version, giving the user a more life like playing experience. The user can select what style of tournament he would like to participate in, and can also choose to undertake an entire season.
Aside from the updates in teams and players, this newer version of Sensible World of Soccer also features other improvements and less bugs. Since the gamer actually plays the part of a player coach, he will surely appreciate the upgrade in some on the field moves, including bendy passes and long, looping headers. The crowds are more noticeably animated and provide for a much cooler “gamy” atmosphere. There are also more cut scenes to celebrate great achievements, scores, or stellar plays…drawing the user farther into the game. The game also offers carrots for the successful coach. For example, after three consecutive successful seasons, the gamer’s coaching prowess is recognized, and he will be offered the opportunity to manage the national team in the World Cup or European Championship. Rewards are always nice, and what bigger reward is there in a sporting event than making it to the big show?
This version of the Sensible Soccer series should be highly sought after, since shortly after its inception, the game format went to three dimensional, which was much harder to play. While the newer games offer a more personal view of the action, the big picture is lost and user’s will certainly come to appreciate SWOS 96/97 even more than before.
In conclusion, this is one of the better soccer games to date, and was certainly a premier game for its day. Many changes and “improvements” occurred following this game, making it an influential collector’s item, of sorts, but it is also very valuable as an excellent play and fine example of a workable, entertaining sports game.
