Sanitarium is a great classic adventure game. It's a little on the creepy side as it is based inside an insane asylum. I would be playing this game in the evening and get so engrossed that I would find myself sitting in the dark and jumping at noises because the game had me on edge. If you are weak at heart and get easily crept out, this game may not be for you. Some scenes do leave you feeling ick, but it is a Sanitarium after all. I picked this game up on sale, even though I was leery of a survival horror type game. But it really grew on me the more I played it.
A nice change of pace is that you play the game as different characters and there are quite a range from a comic book character to your dead sister. Everything is tied in with the main story and works quite admirably.
The puzzles were not extremely difficult to solve but they were challenging. There is nothing worse than a game that takes no brains to solve. Every die hard adventurer wants a little bit of challenge. The nice thing about the puzzles is that they actually seemed related to the purpose of what you were doing and not just tossed in to keep the puzzle quota up.
I feel the graphics would still hold up in today's adventure genre. They are 2D but that is what works for this game. I think the best adventure games work well in a 2D environment.
It is a point and click game, sometimes a pixel hunt. The story is developed through cinematic cut scenes and interactions of the character. The storyline kept you pulled in and made you want to keep going to see how the crazy story would evolve
The save feature is quite handy as you can save anywhere not just at designated spots. That may not seem like much, but for me I love a game where you can stop and save when you need to, not when the game forces you.
Overall, a highly enjoyable experience and well worth playing. It is a game that makes you wonder why don't they make them like this anymore. The storyline was deep and kept you interested, the graphics are still acceptable to today’s standard, the puzzles help you move through the story and are not just roadblocks without a purpose. There are many great features in this game. Download Sanitarium (sanitarium.zip)
