Needless to say, this is one of the finest games that I have ever had the joy to play. Sure, by today's standards, the graphics suck, the sound sucks, and the limited number of commands sucks, but the pure nostalgia value is awesome.
This game teaches life lessons, like how to avoid dysentery, and how to caulk and float wagons across rivers, and how to always remember to save up enough money to take the Toll Road and not have to navigate the river of hell! It is cool how the game manages the difficulty level, based on what profession you choose in the beginning. You can choose to be a banker, if you want an easy ride, or go with being a farmer, if you want to die. And die you will.
This game is not for the faint of heart. People will die, a whole lot of people. The range of diseases is quite impressive, and the fact that you have no medicine for them only adds to the fun. There is no way to cure sickness in the game, you merely have to hope that your people will pull through.
On the downside, the game can tend to get short. Once you learn how to play it, it is fairly easy to beat it in just a dozen or so minutes, if even that. Really, the game itself, in terms of gameplay, is not that great. Hunting is nearly impossible. The only reason one should play this is just so he/she can remember the good ole days in Elementary School playing this game (if you are of the generation that was in Elementary School in the 90's). Sure, with the PS3 and the XBOX 360, this game may seem ancient and of faulty technology, but who cares. You aren't going to play it for that reason. You are not here to play games that look amazing and have complicated control systems. No. You are here to remember the glory days of gaming, a day when fancy graphics and controls dominated the industry. You are here to remember when substance mattered, when emotion and story were the driving force in a game.
Suffice to say, this could be one of the best Adventure games ever made, next to Monkey Island. Don't think, just download, play and enjoy. There is nothing more to say. If you are a fan of adventure games, or just good games in general, or you are just looking for some good old fashioned gaming, don't pass this up.
