Tremulous is a first person shooter featuring two opposing teams, humans and aliens. Both teams are able to build structures such as spawn points, which are vital to their victory. The goal of Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing teams and all of their spawn points.
Each team in Tremulous differs fundamentally from the other. The aliens are class based, with two classes initially available: the alien team’s builder, known as the Granger, and the Dretch, the weakest offensce alien. The aliens are awarded frags for killing their foes which may be used to evolve into stronger classes, capable of greater and more varied maneuvers. In contrast the human team is upgrade based, receiving credits for kills that may be exchanged at an Armoury structure for new weapons, armour and equipment. Two such upgrades are available for free: a rifle and a construction kit, used for building structures.
During a game of Tremulous, each team occupies one of three stages of development. These states are reached by accruing more than a specific total number of kills by the whole team. Each new stage unlocks classes, upgrades and buildable structures. If one team reaches a stage significantly earlier than the other team it stands a better chance of defeating the opposing team.
Reviewer: prakaa Tremulous is a RTS-shooter that will remind all of us of Quake III: Arena and the Natural Selection mod for Half Life 2. It is probably one of the most active and entertaining open-source, multiplayer FPS out on the Net.
Tremulous is a team-based shooter, with a hint of RTS. There are two factions, the technologically based humans and the fast, horde-like aliens (different from some games where aliens are recognised as the highest on the tech ladder). Each race can build structures; their functions include defensive roles and aid stations. When building, the team must build certain structures, such as power stations, to support these facilities. The main objective of the game is to eliminate the enemy's respawners, which results in victory.
Tremulous stands out in its ability to differentiate the races and their technologies. Teams have to gain a certain amount of kills to be able to "advance" a stage. For humans, this means new technologies, including a Tesla Coil turret. Also, upgrades such as new weapons and armour may be bought in a constructed armoury (i.e. you spawn as a basic unit, but you may upgrade).
For aliens, who lack these advancements, the team gains more classes. Aliens start with basic builders and grangers (basic attack units), but as team kills accumulate, the team may get the powerful tyrant class, a fast and powerful monster that strikes fear into my heart whenever I play as the humans. Though these techs are available to the team, the player must accumulate currency (frags for aliens, credits for humans) to gain these things for themselves. You can get currency from destroying buildings and killing enemies.
This graphics of Tremulous are what one would expect out of the Quake 3 Arena engine. The textures of the game are quite good, however, within the limits of the engine, polygonal shapes are quite evident in each sprite. However, graphics are not the focal point of this game at all. I completely forgot about them when I was in a tough game!
Teamwork is encouraged, as whenever I stray into enemy territory alone, I get killed before I can make one strike. This is an excellent feature in the game, as it encourages teamwork and the use of tactics. Another great feature of the game is sudden death. When experienced players are on a server, there is a stalemate that occurs, as defences in both bases are very strong, and can be rebuilt if destroyed. The sudden death feature kicks in 15-20 minutes before the end of th game, and this disables construction. Though it's probably the aliens who will win, as they will attack with brute force. Players clever enough may be able to outwit them as humans.
The online community is quite active, and most players are ready to help new people.
Tremulous is an excellent venture into a Team Fortress 2-like genre, and it should be highly commended for its unique gameplay and contrasting races. Gameplay is improved by the players and how they work together. All in all, Tremulous is an excellent team-based FPS, which is best played in 1 and a half hour time-frames.
