Secret Maryo Chronicles is an open source game which gives a nice taste of Mario on your computer. Although the version that you can download here is not the final version, it is almost completed.
The graphics are good and you can select different worlds to play in. When playing I got a little frustrated by the way Maryo walks. It feels like he is walking on ice and sometimes he slides a little.
This really get frustrating when you slide near a monster and when you hit it.
Besides that, this game is worth playing when you feel bored and want to play a Mario game without paying for it.
Reviewer: lexter2000 This game is obviously inspired by the wonderful Mario series. In this 2D, single player platformer you must complete a variety of levels avoiding such enemies as pirannha plants, dragons and flying turtles. Within each level you can recover a variety of power ups that can help you accomplish a large amount of tasks, including gaining extra lives, and getting larger. For the most part, each time the character is hit by a bad guy he is dead unless is has gotten larger from a mushroom or has a star. Upon completing all the levels, you will save the princess, the entire goal of the main character.
This game is a lot of fun and very reminiscent of the original Mario Brothers series. It is easy to handle, and has decent graphics for such a game. It was fun playing it for the first time because it was so famillar to me and I was able to get into it right away. If you are a hardcore Mario fan or have just been introduced to this wonderful series then you must check this game out mainly because there aren't a lot of better takes on the original series. When I began playing it I was ready to dismiss it as another quickly programmed and put together knock off, but I was definitely pleasantly suprised.
Just some other random facts about the game. It initially came out in January of 2003, and has been given several updates since then, its latest release being September 2008. The game was created by SourceForge. The game has an original soundtrack, it has a game editor, and it was put as number one Open Source Game by APC Magazine. On top of that it has been featured and or reviewed by other magazines and websites.
The last thing I would like to add is the wonderful variations that are in this game. You will recognize the mushroom, flower and star from the original series. But you will also find cool new items such as a moon, an ice mushroom, and a ghost mushroom. What is cool is some of these even help you find hidden items found around the level. If you want to know what exactly these new items do or what the secret items are you will just have to play the game!
I would definitely recommend this game to anyone; it was a delight and a refreshing take on the Mario series.
