Reviewer: Dos-Games-Online In the middle nineties, Epic Mega Games released Tyrian (later re-released without so many bugs and with a few upgrades as Tyrian 2000). It was developed by Eclipse Productions and was basically a space shooting game.
Tyrian features arcade style of action in a science fiction setting. It is a vertical scrolling shooter where the user is in command of a small space ship that can be outfitted with numerous weapons. By destroying enemies and collecting bonuses, the space ship can acquire the game’s answer to cash. This money can be used to purchase some serious upgrades such as better weapons, more powerful shields, and energy generators. The user can even buy better ships in general from menus in the interim between levels.
The advent of shields and armor are great additions to the space shooter game during this time zone, and they allowed the user to survive longer and do more damage before succumbing to enemy fire. Since the user can live longer, he does not have to repeat the same sequences so often and the game becomes much less tedious and more action packed and fast paced, instead. The power ups add more depth to the game by changing the user’s ability to shoot, and by altering the power of the space ship. Still, it is not a shooting game that takes itself too seriously. The power up items are coins, fruits, and other things not likely to be found in space…just floating in the air. The graphics are cartoonish and fun as opposed to realistic and detailed.
Tyrian features several different difficulty levels to customize the game to each user’s skill level. It offers the standard “easy/medium/hard” options, but also contains some hidden options for Tyrian fans who feel they are up to a challenge. These are “suicide” and “lord of the game”. The more difficult settings offer enemies with more health and the ability to shoot more bullets more quickly. The harder settings also have hidden levels, which are fun to find.
The game is most popularly played in single player story mode that will offer some little blurbs of text as the user plays, revealing the plot. There will be tons of upgrades as the user progresses…beginning with a basic machine gun, the user can purchase bigger and better guns, cooler shields, and even a pair of sidekicks that serve as a shadow to the Tyrian pilot and offer up more fire power.
This is a nice little space shooter that many people are going to enjoy. It is cartoony and colorful and a fast paced little play. It is satisfying and solid…a sure pick. Download Tyrian - tyrsw1.zip
