This is one of the first NHL hockey games for the PC. It is very similar to the Sega Genesis/Super Nintendo versions of hockey, a vertical scrolling rink, with stars to indicate focus players. This demo lets you play as the Montreal Canadiens (woohoo Go Habs!) against the computer as the Los Angeles Kings (this game was made when Wayne Gretzky was on the LA Kings so you get to play against the Great One!) This is probably the best hockey computer game in the early 90s. Understandably, the graphics are dated, and it is not quite like a modern hockey game.
If you like hockey and don't mind old graphics, download this game from Electronic Arts, the serious expert in sports games!
Reviewer: Mistertbones NHL Hockey, or NHL ’94 as it is called on the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems, is one of my favorite games of all time. Although crude by today’s standards, the game is still considered among the classic Hockey Games of all time. The game was designed to give hockey fans a very realistic gaming experience, and EA Sports did not disappoint. The signature vertical camera angle combines with the same two dimensional sprite set used in NHL ’93. The game was praised for its improvement on the predecessor, which was released for the Genesis and the Super Nintendo. Unlike NHL ’93, in which the team names were fictionalized, but the players’ names were real, the team names were real in NHL ’94 because EA Sports received an NHL license. NHL ’94 introduced the one-timer shot, in which the player shoots the puck directly off of a teammate’s pass. It has been included in numerous best sports games lists, and is considered to be one of the best hockey games of all time. The gameplay is excellent, fast paced, and fluid. Aside from the aforementioned one-timer shot, control of the players is much better than it was in NHL ’93. There is also a stupid punk who sits in the stands, who provides tons of laughter for everybody, and you are able to save your records. The game also contains several humorous glitches, as well as some annoying ones. Sometimes, the instant replay goes beserk by showing strange signs, weird noises, and bizzare effects, which can be entertaining to say the least. For the demo on this website, it features the Montreal Canadiens, a team that has won twenty-four Stanley Cups. Although the legendary Maurice Richard isn’t on the Montreal roster, it does feature Kirk Muller and Denis Savard. On the Los Angeles Kings is the legendary Great One, Wayne Gretzky, the all time leading scorer in NHL history. It is pretty cool that you can play as or against the Great One in this game. Overall, this game is one of the best, and I highly recommend it to any hockey fan, or just plain average gamer who wants to have fun. I also recommend it to a sports gaming junkie. It won't take long for anyone who downloads this game to become quickly addicted to its cool and improved play. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed. Download NHL Hockey (nhlhocky.zip)
