In this game, you play the role of Captain Kirk, and it is your job to destroy the Klingons. This is similar to EGATrek in concept and design, you have a control panel from which you take actions and make decisions.

Somewhat hard to understand, requires a fair amount of learning, skill, and patience to play.

If you like complex space games, download this game now.

Visual Star Trek, AKA: VGA Trek, was originally intended to be the upgrade/sequal to its predecessor; EGA Trek (which was a much simpler and straightforward game).

VGA Trek took many of the options of EGA Trek and extended them. You now command the USS Enterprise as James T. Kirk as opposed to the USS Lexington. Veterens of EGA Trek will immidately notice a lot of the similarities and differences right at the beginning. The screen has the same basic layout, but one will notice that there is A LOT more space out there to explore and given the fact that the enemy fleets move about, just exploring could take awhile.

You also have more of the Trek 'goodies' in your arsenal as well as more alien species to contend with. Now you have not only the Klingons to deal with, but the Romulans and Tholians. The Romulans make use of their cloaking technology to avoid battle at times and the Tholians have their energy webs to throw into your path in order to make life difficult. But all is not lost! You have use of transporters (you can actually pick about where abouts to send your landing parties instead of just beaming down and being done with it), probes, and even the tractor beams in addition to the standard shields, phasers and photon torpedoes that you are used to.

Word of Caution about exploring planets; try not to pick up any tribbles! You'll have a hard time getting rid of them as they tend to give Scotty a headache by wandering into the engines or distracting Sulu at the helm so that he can't pilot the ship! It ends up being a pain when you're in the middle of of battle with a squadron of Klingon Battlecruisers.

The scenario is roughtly the same as EGA Trek; destroy the Klingon threat before they wipe out the Federation. No pressure or anything.

One of the major things lacking in VGA Trek is the lack of any kind of files or book to tell you how to operate all the systems at your disposal. You'll find most of your early games just trying to figure out how everything works as it's going to be trial and error a lot of the time. One thing I remember about the game when I first bought it back in the '80s was the lack of any kind of instruction whatsoever. The game is fun to play one you have it figured out and plays similar to EGA Trek. But as far as replayability is concerned; I'd personally stick to EGA Trek.
