This old-style ASCII based game is based on the popular science fiction TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation. You play the role of Captain Picard, and you give orders to your crew. I found this game hard to figure out, but if you are into very old computer space games, you may like this.
If you're a Trekkie this game may be somewhat interesting. If you don't know much about Star Trek, don't download this game.
Reviewer: theartbook35 "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is a game which holds many personal memories for me.
I spent much time as a child watching my father play this game. It was rather difficult for me at that age. Typing in the coordinates and plotting ways to take out your enemy was not an easy task.
This game is laid out very much like chess. You position your ship at the right area, and then strike. I greatly enjoy the messages you could receive from other captains, as well at the event log at the bottom of the screen.
The graphics of the game are not that impressive. We have to remember this was created many years ago, and most old DOS games did not have the superb pixel graphics like we see on the Nintendo DS. Explosions were simple. For anyone, especially boys and men, a good explosion in a game is a must.
When you compare this to modern day Star Trek games, the three dimensional console games just don't measure up. The controls for those are hard to manage, and sometimes confusing. If you are an old enough age, this DOS game is a much easier task to manage.
The sound effects are minimal at best. The music is limited, which can leave the game feeling a bit boring. Needless to say, this adds to the game's simple quality, which nowadays is a rarity among console games.
For anyone who is a Star Trek fan, this holds very true to the television series. There are no flaws that I can see in character design, and no apparent flaws in the design of the ships. The creators took one exciting aspect of the show, which is to blow up the bad guy, and turned it into a game without ruining the integrity of the show. It's nice to feel like you are the captain for once.
I recommend this game for anyone who likes mathematical challenges, complicated strategies, and avid Star Trek fans. This game held it's own against classic DOS platforms like Dig Dug and Crystal Caves.
However, even this minimal violence, this game is not recommended for the youth. It is very hard to understand, and could become frustrating for someone who is very young. Download Star Trek: The Next Generation (nextrek.zip)
