This is a replica of a classic Atari 2600 game called Astrosmash. You control a ground turret, and you shoot falling asteroids as they keep coming down. Also there are white bombs, don't let these hit the ground. When an asteroid hits the ground you lose points. You keep playing until you lose all your turrets, the game gets harder and harder as you get more points. Overall, an excellent close replica that is almost identical to the original.

I am a huge fan of retro games and spent way too much time in childhood playing away on such games as pong, Jet Set Whilly and the later on the likes of Swiv and Super Mario Brothers. I would say the simplicity of them generally makes them hugely addictive and gives the gamer an opportunity to 'pick up and play' when they have a spare five minutes sadly lacking in more modern games that see to require hours and hours of daily dedication just to progress.
The controls are pretty simple, and away from the button mashing arcade style shootem-ups you may have played in the past, this requires a more subtle approach of pre-empting where you think the asteroids are headed and to shoot them before the get too close, the only real problem I can see is in later levels where there are a lots more asteroids, moving quicker making them far more difficult to hit.
The graphics are the super cool super retro style, albeit that the color schemes are a little gaudy! Naturally as with all retro style games, what you see is what you get, and the graphics were only ever a tiny part of these games, in a word it’s all about the 'playability'.
I don't recall playing the original Astrosmash on the Atari in my childhood but am certain that I’ve played games similar. I wouldn't say I totally agreed with the synopsis that it’s "an excellent close replica that is almost identical to the original" but it is fairly addictive and great to play if you have a spare five minutes.
So to summarize, definitely download Smashteroid, have fun. Good game overall!
