This game of pong although simple remains entertaining because of said simplicity. Pong originally created in the 1970s remains a favourite of today’s youth as a similar version of the game is found on cell phones as well as other internet games; however, this version of pong remains similar to the original version of the game. Originally, the game of pong was released as a coin operated arcade game named after the game of table tennis, which was in turn named for the sound made by the ball when it is hit by the paddle. Many video gamers regard pong as the world’s first video game and it was unarguably the first video game to have widespread popularity in both the arcade and console versions. The game of pong paved the way for future video games such as Pac-Man as well as other games by creating not only an arcade market but a home consol consumer market as well.
In staying with the original tradition of pong, the game contains no frills such as power ups, lasers, and extra lives unlike its modern day counterparts. The simple design of the screen ensures that nothing detracts from the game and the screen resembles the playing area of a table tennis game with a few added obstacles. The object of the game is simple, to get the ball past your opponents paddle by knocking the ball back and forth somewhat similar to a game of table tennis where when the paddle misses the ball or the ball exits the screen a turn is essentially lost or rather the opponent who did not miss the ball gets a point. Games are played until a player reaches fifteen points. In order to reach the other side one must “hit” the ball in a way so as you opponent cannot or does not reach the ball in time to “survive”. This game offers three levels of difficulty each getting progressively more difficult as well as two player and one player mode- the one player mode being played against a computer.
Ironically, the game of pong has been used as a teaching tool in many classrooms because of the examination of projectiles as the ball becomes a projectile after it is propelled through space by the paddle exerting a force on it thus causing the ball to travel in a certain direction. Not only is pong entertaining for adults and youth alike, but also remains a valuable teaching tool for generations to come.
