Nitemare 3D is a game in the Hugo serie, although you might think it isn't. You are Hugo and you're walking around in the house of the evil Dr. Hamerstein. He kidnapped your girlfriend, Penelope. It's your task to find her and to rescue her. While you're walking around, you'll see ghosts and other creatures that belong to the evil plan of Dr. Hamer stein.
Nitemare 3D has excellent graphics and a very nice gameplay.
The sounds and music are less good, they're just to simple. The sound of the gun is very fake and so are more sounds.
TIP: To run this game DOSbox, use CPU Cycles 2500 (standard) and Frameskip 7 or 8.
Reviewer: Dos-Games-Online What does one get when they combine the first person shooter classic Wolfenstein 3D with the unusual but popular adventure gaming classic Hugo’s House of Horrors? The answer is Nitemare 3D. Nitemare 3D is an uncommon blend of games, featuring the feel and game play that is similar to the Wolfenstein shooter, but following the theme and storyline of Hugo’s House of Horrors. The result is a workable early shooter for the personal computer that was playable in both the DOS and Windows operating systems. It was a shareware only release that was developed by Grey Design Associates and made available for play in the middle nineties. Since it was largely inspired by Hugo’s House of Horrors, it also features a horror theme, but is an action game as opposed to a point and click adventure.
Despite the change in game play, Nitemare 3D still does a good job of following the story that was originally marked out in Hugo’s House of Horrors. The gamer will play the stereotypical part of a young man in love, off on a mad mission to rescue his girlfriend. She has been captured by a crazy scientist, Dr. Hammerstein, who intends to make a guinea pig of Penelope in his weird experiments. Unlike the original Hugo’s House of Horrors, the gamer does not have to guide Hugo through a series of puzzles in order to save his poor girlfriend. Instead, he must get out the artillery and fire his way through Dr. Hamerstein’s baddies until he saves the girl and the day. The haunted mansion is still present, but it is divided into thirty levels in three episodes. The shareware version will not feature all of the episodes, but the levels are not evenly divided among the available episodes, and even the shareware version will still offer the gamer slightly under twenty total levels.
As young Hugo battles his way to Dr. Hamerstein’s laboratory, he will face some minor elements of puzzle solving…nothing like the scale that the original game features, but more like a Tomb Raider style game would offer. The main focus, however, is on defeating Dr. Hamerstein’s minions in battle. Most of the monsters are classic horror themed lackeys, such as ghosts, bats and ghouls. Hugo will have a magical wand, and several types of guns, including a plasma gun and a silver bullet pistol.
Nitemare 3D is not a bad little game and it does a good job of combining several elements, giving it more depth than the average FPS. Give it a try and check out the alter ego of Hugo, action hero.
